Your Mouth Can Tell You More Than You Think

Your Mouth Can Tell You More Than You Think Early detection saves lives. This April, Snö Clinics is committed to making sure yours is never missed.

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month — and at Snö Clinics, we believe that awareness without action is just noise. So this month, we’re not just raising a ribbon. We’re talking about what oral cancer actually looks like, why routine dental exams are your first line of defence, and how the Snö Exam is specifically designed to catch what others miss.

“Oral cancer has a survival rate of over 80% when caught early — yet most cases are still diagnosed at an advanced stage simply because the signs were overlooked.”

— World Health Organization, 2024

The Numbers We Cannot Ignore

The tragedy of oral cancer is not just how serious it is — it’s how preventable late-stage diagnosis is. Most oral cancers begin as small, painless changes in the mouth that a trained clinician can spot during a routine exam. Which is exactly why showing up to your dental appointment is about far more than keeping your teeth clean.

Know the Warning Signs

Many people don’t realise that oral cancer can look and feel like very ordinary, easy-to-dismiss symptoms. Here’s what to look — and feel — for:

If you’ve noticed any of these for more than two to three weeks, don’t wait. Book an appointment. It’s very likely nothing — but if it is something, early detection changes everything.

Your Risk Factors

Anyone can develop oral cancer, but certain factors significantly increase your risk. These include tobacco use (smoking or chewing), heavy alcohol consumption, prolonged sun exposure to the lips, infection with HPV — particularly strain 16 — and a prior diagnosis of oral cancer. Age is also a factor: most cases occur in people over 40, though rates in younger adults are rising, largely due to HPV.

Living in the UAE, many of us are exposed to intense UV radiation year-round, making lip cancer an underappreciated local concern. Additionally, shisha (waterpipe smoking) — widely enjoyed across the region — carries the same oral cancer risks as cigarettes, despite common misconceptions that it is safer.

What Transparency Looks Like at Snö

  • A digital or printed copy of all your exam results — always yours to keep
  • All x-rays, scans, and intraoral photos from your visit
  • A properly documented diagnosis so you understand your treatment options fully
  • Clear information on alternatives, risks, prognoses, costs, and guarantees
  • Full documentation before, during, and after any treatment — for your security, audit trail, and second opinion rights

Why Documented Exams Matter for Cancer Screening

One of the most underappreciated aspects of oral cancer detection is the importance of baseline documentation. A single exam tells your dentist what’s there right now. A series of properly documented exams — with photos, scans, and written records — tells a story. It shows change. And change is often what raises the flag.

This is the principle behind the Snö Exam. Every finding is photographed, recorded, and stored — accessible via the Snö app, always yours to take home. If a lesion appears that wasn’t there six months ago, or if a patch of tissue has changed colour or shape, we can see that directly. That level of documentation is how early detection actually works in practice.

What Happens If Something Is Found?

If your dentist identifies a suspicious area during your exam, this does not mean you have cancer. It means you’ll be referred for further evaluation — typically a tissue biopsy performed by a specialist — to determine exactly what’s going on. Most lesions turn out to be benign. But the ones that aren’t? Those are the ones where acting quickly saves lives.

At Snö, we will always explain every finding to you clearly, in full, and in terms you can understand. We believe you deserve to know exactly what is in your mouth — and what your options are. That’s not just good medicine. It’s your right.

This April: Make the Appointment

Oral Cancer Awareness Month is a reminder that prevention and early detection are the most powerful tools we have. The best thing you can do for yourself this April is simple: book a comprehensive dental exam if you haven’t had one recently, and make sure it includes a full soft tissue screening.

You invest time in your health in countless other ways. Your mouth deserves the same attention — not just for your smile, but for your life.
