Children and Orthodontics
Orthodontic treatment typically begins between ages 9 and 14, but some children benefit from earlier intervention. A check-up by age 7 allows the orthodontist to assess your child’s needs and recommend the most suitable treatment in Abu Dhabi.
Early treatment, when necessary, can help:
- Guide jaw growth
- Reduce the risk of trauma to protruding teeth
- Correct harmful oral habits
- Improve appearance & self-esteem
- Guide permanent teeth into better positions
- mprove the way lips meet

Signs Your Child May Need an Orthodontic Consultation
- Difficulty chewing or biting
- Thumb-sucking
- Breathing through the mouth
- Early or late loss of baby teeth
- Crowded, misplaced, or blocked-out teeth
- Protruding teeth
- Jaws that are too far forward or back
- Biting the cheek or biting into the roof of the mouth
- Upper and lower teeth that do not fit well together
- An unbalanced facial appearance
- Grinding or clenching of the teeth
At Snö Dental Clinics, we never over-treat. Our approach ensures that essential treatments for health and function are prioritised, while unnecessary procedures, like tooth extractions that could lead to severe orthodontic problems later, are avoided.
If your child may need treatment, we’ll guide you on the best time to begin.
Two-Phase Orthodontic Treatment
In some cases, a two-phase treatment plan is recommended. This involves two separate stages of treatment:
Phase 1 (Early Treatment) - Laying the Foundation
- Age: While baby teeth are still present
- Focus: Correcting jaw growth and ensuring enough space for permanent teeth
- Goal: Prevent severe misalignment, reduce need for extractions or surgery later
Why is early planning important?
Children grow rapidly, and orthodontic appliances can guide jaw development, ensuring enough space for permanent teeth. Addressing issues early may prevent more complex treatments later.
Resting Period – Natural Growth Phase
After Phase 1, the remaining permanent teeth erupt naturally. No retainers are typically used during this period, but regular monitoring (every six months) ensures proper development.

Phase 2 (Final Alignment) - Perfecting the Smile
- Age: After most or all permanent teeth have erupted
- Treatment: Braces on all teeth for approximately 24 months
- Goal: Ensure each tooth is positioned correctly for optimal function and aesthetics
Retention Phase:
After braces are removed, retainers are used to maintain the final result and keep the smile looking perfect.
