Dental Veneers Treatment

Teeth can become discoloured for different reasons. This means that bleaching is not always the best solution. Some teeth cannot be bleached. Old fillings have visible borders that become more pronounced when bleached, making it unsightly. To avoid these problems, your dentist might recommend using a crown made from ceramic. This is particularly helpful if most of the tooth is either filled or damaged, where bleaching would be unsuitable. However, if the tooth is healthy, crowns are not recommended, as much of the healthy tooth would have to be destroyed to make way for the crown.

A modern alternative is a dental veneer. A veneer is a very thin shell made of porcelain and customized to fit individual patients’ teeth. It will be glued to the outer surface of the tooth, forming a strong bond. The appearance is natural because the dental veneer mimics the layers of enamel.

This patient was unhappy with the colour of her teeth and the old fillings (yellow). First, all her teeth were bleached. Then, veneers were placed on the front four teeth. Dental veneers allow you to alter the shape of the teeth. So this patient requested an increase in the length of her front teeth.

Enamel is a relatively thin and transparent layer on the surface of the tooth. Under the enamel is the dentine, which is darker and coloured. The veneer is glued to the enamel and masks the darker underlying dentine. The porcelain used for dental veneers is very similar to enamel, making the appearance natural – almost like a new layer of enamel.

A tooth gets its natural colour from reflections of light through the different layers of the tooth. In order to create a natural appearance, the dentist will try to mimic the natural construction of the tooth. Dental veneers are highly precise, very thin shells of porcelain. They are customised to fit each individual patient and tooth. The veneer is glued to the outer surface. It mimics the natural appearance of the tooth, almost like a new layer of enamel.

It is not necessary to remove any tooth substance if you choose to increase the size of a tooth with dental veneer treatment. However, your dentist might need to remove a thin layer of enamel – usually 0.5mm – to accommodate the veneer. Next, your dentist will take an impression of your tooth and create a cast. Our dental laboratory will then make your customised dental veneer and your dentist will schedule a fitting. If the fit and appearance are to your liking, the veneer will be “cemented” (glued) in place, and you can enjoy your new smile.

  • What are dental veneers?

Veneers are thin, long-lasting shells composed of tooth-colored materials that are glued to a tooth’s surface to improve its appearance.

  • What type of dental veneers are there?

The most prevalent veneer materials are porcelain and composite bonding. To improve the appearance of a tooth, composite veneers are constructed of a resin that is molded and attached to the tooth. Porcelain veneers are often created in a lab and are more stain-resistant than other materials.

  • What is better, composite bonding or porcelain veneers?

Inquire with your prosthodontist about the best solution for you. Cosmetic bonding is a good option if the needed alterations are small and the teeth function adequately. Porcelain veneers may be the best solution if teeth are spaced, cracked, dark, and/or you tend to clench or grind your teeth.

  • What is the procedure of getting dental veneers?

A porcelain veneer is normally obtained by a multi-step procedure. The initial step is to schedule an appointment with a prosthodontist. You can discuss your goals and concerns at this appointment, and a prosthodontist will explain how veneers will benefit you. It’s possible that X-rays or impressions of your teeth will be required. The preparation of the tooth for the veneer is the next stage. An impression is taken after a little piece of tooth structure is removed. Following that, the prosthodontist will insert temporary veneers. The temporaries are removed at the next session, and the final veneer is attached to your tooth.

The prosthodontist will remove a little bit of tooth structure and glue filling material to your teeth in the case of veneers produced from tooth-colored filling material, also known as composite bonding. This sort of veneer does not last as long as a porcelain veneer and does not stain as well.

  • What are the advantages to veneer dentistry?

Veneers preserve the largest amount of tooth structure possible because just a small quantity of tooth structure is removed. Dental veneers can improve the appearance of your teeth, and they are well tolerated by gum tissues. The color of the veneers can be customized, and they are stain-resistant in the case of porcelain veneers.

  • What are the disadvantages to veneer dentistry?

The procedure is not reversible once your tooth has been prepared for the veneer. It is difficult to restore a veneer that has cracked without having to replace the entire veneer. It is critical to avoid habits such as pen-chewing or nail-biting, which can cause the veneer to crack. Veneers are not a smart choice for persons who have bad gums. Additionally, persons who grind or clench their teeth put their veneers in danger of chipping or splitting. Finally, because veneers are still prone to deterioration, it is critical that you maintain good oral hygiene and see your dentist on a regular basis.

  • Am I a good candidate for dental veneers?

You may be interested in veneers if your teeth are discolored or chipped, as veneers will cover up your existing teeth. Veneer dentistry is also popular for smile makeovers or for people who want to achieve their ideal smile.

  • How long do dental veneers last?

A veneer usually lasts between 5 and 10 years. Other than normal brushing, flossing, and visits to the prosthodontist, they don’t require any particular care. They can live considerably longer if they are properly cared for. Cleanings by a professional every six months and a yearly exam are strongly advised.
