Teeth Whitening & Bleaching Treatment

Teeth whitening has been a part of dentistry for more than a century. There are many reasons for dark or discoloured teeth, but sometimes, people simply like to have whiter teeth. Modern whitening methods are completely safe and painless meaning almost everybody can have a whiter smile. These are some simple whitening techniques.

At Snö we offer individualised, in-office power bleaching with Zoom and/or home bleaching with Opalescens.

Power bleaching is a quick fix. Home bleaching achieves the same results, and sometimes even provides better results. Often, we recommend a combination.

Before Teeth Bleaching After Teeth Bleaching
In this case of normal home bleaching, only the upper teeth have been treated. Home bleaching 12 times (while sleeping) with customised individual bleaching trays (can also be used in the future for touch-ups) can have favourable results.

Before Home Bleaching After Home Bleaching
Home bleaching upper teeth over five days for two hours during the day.

We often recommend a combination of bleaching, composites or veneers. The patient in this case has had their teeth bleached and then had four veneers placed on the upper front teeth.

The procedure
Using our modern scanning equipment, your Snö dentist will take an impression of both your upper and lower jaws to make plaster models. Based on the models, individual bleach guards are made. Your dentist will instruct you on how to place the bleach gel in the guards before placing them over your teeth. Depending on the severity of discolouration, the number of times to repeat the treatment will vary. Each treatment lasts 1-2 hours and will ideally be repeated 10-15 times.

Before Teeth Bleaching After Teeth Bleaching
A more complicated case with innate discolourations. After 15 treatments (right) on both upper and lower jaws.

How does it work?
The colour of the tooth is determined by the light reflecting through the many layers of the tooth, including the underlying dentine. The colour of the layers determines the colour of the tooth. The outer layers are normally lighter than the deeper layers of dentine, which are more colourful (yellow). The enamel has microscopic cracks where colour from food and beverages accumulate over years. When you bleach teeth, the bleaching agent will penetrate the microscopic cracks and dissolve the colourants.

The enamel protects the teeth. Under the enamel is the dentine, which is usually darker and more yellow. In the centre is the nerve and blood supply.

Is it dangerous?
Mild to moderate dosages of the bleaching agent is not harmful. Nowadays, many dentists recommend using milder solutions for longer. It is gentler on the teeth and has even less side effects.

How long does it last?
In most cases, the effects of bleaching will last about a year. With a home bleach kit you can easily top up the bleach when needed, and continue to use your bleach guards.

Can all teeth be bleached?
Almost all teeth can be bleached. However, it is important to ensure there is no decay or leaky fillings. Old fillings or crowns will not bleach, but patients can change their fillings or crowns.

Yellow- or brown-stained teeth are easier to bleach than greyish teeth. Teeth with multiple discolourations are also difficult to bleach. It usually takes longer and does not produce a uniform result. Multi-discoloured teeth are also more difficult to bleach. It can take longer and the result is not always harmonious. Your dentist might recommend bleaching the teeth individually to ensure a better result.

Studies show that 85 percent of home bleaching cases are successful. If you need expert help, our dentists at Snö are always ready to help.

Power bleaching
Onsite bleaching can be done with a stronger solution in order to get a faster result. When power bleaching is performed, we generally provide our patients with a bleaching tray for home bleaching in order to continue the treatment or to be able to do touch-ups in the future. A power bleaching treatment normally takes approximately 60-120 minutes. We will gently add protection for your gums and then administer the bleaching solution in several sessions, while using a light to speed up the process. The results from Zoom are similar to home bleaching.

Dental Veneers

Teeth can become discoloured for different reasons. This means that bleaching is not always the best solution. Some teeth cannot be bleached. Old fillings have visible borders that become more pronounced when bleached, making it unsightly. To avoid these problems, your dentist might recommend using a crown made from ceramic. This is particularly helpful if most of the tooth is either filled or damaged, where bleaching would be unsuitable. However, if the tooth is healthy, crowns are not recommended, as much of the healthy tooth would have to be destroyed to make way for the crown.

A modern alternative is a veneer. A veneer is a very thin shell made of porcelain and customised to fit individual patients’ teeth. It will be glued to the outer surface of the tooth, forming a strong bond. The appearance is natural because the veneer mimics the layers of enamel.

This patient was unhappy with the colour of her teeth and the old fillings (yellow). First, all her teeth were bleached. Then, veneers were placed on the front four teeth. Veneers allow you to alter the shape of the teeth. So this patient requested an increase in the length of her front teeth.

Enamel is a relatively thin and transparent layer on the surface of the tooth. Under the enamel is the dentine, which is darker and coloured. The veneer is glued to the enamel and masks the darker underlying dentine. The porcelain used for veneers is very similar to enamel, making the appearance natural – almost like a new layer of enamel.

A tooth gets its natural colour from reflections of light through the different layers of the tooth. In order to create a natural appearance, the dentist will try to mimic the natural construction of the tooth. Veneers are highly precise, very thin shells of porcelain. They are customised to fit each individual patient and tooth. The veneer is glued to the outer surface. It mimics the natural appearance of the tooth, almost like a new layer of enamel.

This patient’s front tooth was broken in an accident and repaired with composite (above). Over time, it turned slightly yellow. This was fixed using a porcelain veneer (below).

It is not necessary to remove any tooth substance if you choose to increase the size of a tooth with the veneer treatment. However, your dentist might need to remove a thin layer of enamel – usually 0.5mm – to accommodate the veneer. Next, your dentist will take an impression of your tooth and create a cast. Our dental laboratory will then make your customised veneer and your dentist will schedule a fitting. If the fit and appearance are to your liking, the veneer will be “cemented” (glued) in place, and you can enjoy your new smile.

At Snö, our dental technician works like an artist to craft veneers in-house. During an inlay, onlay or crown procedure, we can usually fabricate it on the same day or the next. To make aesthetic veneers usually takes a few more days due to the customisations.

Thanks to our advanced digital scanners, we also save you from the discomfort of taking tooth impressions. A two-minute scan is all we need to get all the information of your teeth in full detail and the highest resolution. The crown is cemented to the tooth – aesthetic, durable and strong.

The quality and lifespan of the veneer has a direct relation to the technique and time spent on the treatment and oral hygiene going forward.

A treatment can look and feel good, but can still have quality concerns. At Snö, we always document everything during treatment in order to ensure our high-quality standard. This applies to veneers too. The veneer treatment also carries a two-year warranty. If you follow our protection plan you can get up to five years of warranty.

Aesthetic Consultation

Aesthetics at Snö starts with defining what a beautiful smile means to you. We want to ensure that you are happy and confident with your very own smile. For us, there is no beauty stereotype. We invite you for a aesthetic consultation, where we can discuss your aesthetic goals and use our advanced scanning, photography, and modelling techniques to simulate different alternatives. Based on this information and your choices we will design a smile that is perfect for you.

Proper planning and communication is the only key to aesthetic and functional success

Your Snö dentist will develop a plan for you to achieve a perfect smile. We will advise you on the right treatments, their costs, and duration. As with all treatments at Snö, we will not pressure you into an expensive treatment that is unhealthy or provides little benefit. You will receive all the information on your smartphone via our Snö app to take home and consider at your leisure or to get a second opinion. Here are the most common aesthetic services we provide:

Teeth alignment
For most people, beauty means regularity and symmetry. Sometimes, people do not feel confident in their smile because of misaligned teeth. The Snö team is proud to have highly experienced aesthetic dentists who can help you decide among the many procedures and methods to treat misaligned teeth. In most cases, teeth can be aligned and straightened in a matter of weeks instead of months or years.

At Snö, we offer all the modern methods of cosmetic aligners: Invisalign™, Clear Aligners, and orthodontic braces and retainers . Of course, our orthodontic team is always available to treat more complex cases.

Veneers
Once teeth are straightened and aligned, the Snö team, if needed, will remove other imperfections like discolourations, poor fillings or chipped/worn teeth. We use ceramic veneers or composite bonding to restore perfect shape and functionality to your teeth.

At Snö we have our own fully equipped dental laboratory and our own dental technicians. Dental technology today incorporates 3D techniques. Dentists are trained for this task, but to excel they must have more than 10 years of dedicated dental laboratory work. Our technicians work in our own lab, with a dedicated focus on dental technology. We can provide new ceramic material as well as veneers/inlays/onlays/crowns (milled ceramic as well as feldspathic) or large (full mouth) milled ceramic (Zirconia/cut back) constructions. All are done in-house as a team, with guidance from the dentists.

At the end, your smile will look exactly as you want your perfect smile to look. Natural, beautiful, and unmistakably your own.

Teeth whitening
Once your confident smile shines, it needs to be retained. If you love black coffee or foods with the ability to discolour your teeth like beetroots or blueberries, your pleasures might leave stains on your teeth. In addition to regular cleaning, additional work might be needed to help you keep your beautiful smile. At Snö we offer individualised, in-office power bleaching with Zoom and/or home bleaching with Opalescens. The procedure is pain-free and quick.

The Snö team will assist you with all your questions.

We are members of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry as well as the Swedish Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

There are a million reasons to smile every day of our life. At Snö we want to give you the confidence to smile whenever you have the opportunity. Unfortunately, many people are concerned about the appearance of their teeth, and smile a lot less.  Aesthetic dentistry is here to change that.

For us, aesthetics go much beyond superficial looks. First and foremost, your mouth should feel and be healthy. But beyond this, the Snö team of aesthetic dentists can help with any correction, no matter how small or big. Some adjustments are quite big and require careful planning, while many smaller treatments can be performed quickly, like a routine correction of the colour of your teeth.
